And it not only suits the game but is stunning to look at. Each level revolves around a different hate or fear, however everything is a little twisted to look evil as a child would view it. The art style is the stuff of nightmares if you were a child. There are even ones that you get to use powerful rockets and the like. The souls are used to buy and equip upgrades that will help you take on the increasingly harder levels. For example, soul collection for further away, or increased shields. Each level normally takes no more than one extra loop, so most last for a few minutes each. If you have not finished collecting souls by the time you hit the end of the level, it will loop back around and you will do it again. Once enough souls are collected, then you finish the level. No longer must you fight to the end of a level, but here you must collect souls. This will make sure you are always paying attention. This gives more versatility to enemy attacks, as they can come from anywhere on the screen. The gameplay is more akin to a twin stick shooter where you move with one stick and shoot with the other. However, it has a few neat tricks up its sleeves. You move around the screen blasting enemies out of the skies until the level is done. NeverAwake’s core mechanics are nothing we have not seen before. The story does its job of moving the game forward and giving reasons for why you are where you are. With the story delivered with diary-like entries that show what happened around each fear. Each level you will playthrough represents the girl’s fears. You play as a black entity who is trying to save its host from a coma and wake her up. The story of NeverAwake is not what I was expecting. However, I like to stick my toe in the water from time to time. I mean there are some cracking games out there, just most don’t click with me. She has been fighting monsters in her dreams.'NeverAwake' is a nightmarish twin-stick shooter with a unique worldview and origin. I have never been a massive fan of the bullet hell/side scrolling shooters. Review Rush was kindly supplied with a review code. Platforms: PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Serise X, PC
